More Canadians Serving In Mexico-August 2006

”You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce fruit that will last.” John 15:16

The sun was shining and being able to sit and watch the boats on the harbor made for a beautiful spot on the shore to have a picnic. Mixed emotions filled the air. Today was the day our summer staff and volunteers would be returning home to their families. Each were delivered to the airport or picked up by family members with lasting memories and lives that will be forever changed.

Jessica, Kiely, Elizabeth, Angela, Alex, Mat

We thank God for blessing us so richly with the many fellow comrades that faithfully served at the Tijuana Outreach Center this summer. Their hard work, many prayers and devotion to serving were a part in ushering 561 Mexican people into the gates of eternity. Great job fellow missionaries!

Many of the youth from the groups that joined us had life changing experiences. Let me share some of them with you.

Amy writes:

When Brad (speaker) spoke about giving everything up to God, it really convicted me. I heard God clearly speaking to my heart. In our quiet time, I just broke down crying, and I still don’t know exactly why. I think I was just overwhelmed with God’s love for me. I’ve been a Christian my whole life, but I never understood that until now. I rededicated my life to Christ, and this time I made sure He knew He got all of me. And now my life will never be the same because it’s not mine, but it’s God’s.

Urryn writes:

God works in AMAZING ways! I was able to share the gospel with over 60 kids through my lesson. My heart was completely turned around. A girl named Cari touched my heart this week. I was blessed to share the simple Gospel message with her and she accepted Christ! I have always wanted to be a missionary to China and this week it was confirmed. I gave all my hopes and dreams to God and am heading to China when I am prepared.

It is exciting to see what God is doing in the lives of our youth as they are the leaders of tomorrow.

Soon other ministries that have been set aside for the summer will resume.
Part of this will be facilitating other Canadian missionaries coming on the field. One of our summer interns, Trevor from Red Deer is filling in his application. He is gifted in many areas including computers. August 31 the Mc Donald family from Loon Lake Saskatchewan will arrive as church planters. September 6 the Liebrecths from Calgary Alberta arrive at the Tijuana Outreach Center with servant hearts willing to help wherever needed.

Rebekah will enter into an all Spanish high school soon. Rod and I are excited about her opportunity to be in a setting where she can master Spanish as a second language. Who knows what the future holds.

Walking Through The Waters Of Baptism-July 2006

“Look around you! Vast fields are ripening all around us and are ready now for the harvest.” John 4:35b

Hola,The day had finally arrived. I looked around and admired the design of the church. I had to be at least a couple hundred years old. The glass windows were intriguing and captured your attention. The regal columns and tall ceilings gave the church a sense of awe. This was a perfect church setting to celebrate such a joyous occassion.

Today, Edwardo would walk through the waters of baptism declaring to the world his faith and commitment to following Jesus Christ. It was not that many months ago that many prayers went up for Edwardo. His life of sin left behind a path of destruction in each life he touched.

Lupita (Edwardo's commonlaw wife) and I attended a bible study together at my neighbors. Lupita shed many tears as she shared openly about this man that dabbled in witchcraft, spent hard earned money on drugs that robbed their family from having food on the table and most painful of all left his family emotionally and physically damaged.

I remember well the first time meeting Edwardo and looking into his eyes. I did not see a man that was evil. In those gentle brown eyes was a man pleading for help.

Help came! When Edwardo was offered the healing power of having a relationship with Jesus Christ, he accepted it. Daily as he submits his life to walking a path of surrendering his life to the teachings of Jesus, he changes.

Today he walks a new path, one that senses the love of Jesus that continues to heal him from his past. Family and friends are forgiving him for past hurts. He asked for myself and others to keep him in our prayers that he would continue to stay strong in this new path.

Edwardo is just one of the many people that will receive this second chance this summer. Weekly many more Mexican people will recognize their need for a relationship with Jesus, the healer of our souls, as Canadians and Americans continue to join us in partaking of the Great Commission. We cherish your prayers as there are many more like Edwardo waiting for the opportunity to know Jesus in a personal way.

We know it is your prayers and support that keep our eyes focused on the purpose of our being here in Mexico. We are always grateful for those that come and join us in ministry during the busy summer months. Just lately Melissa from our home town of Legal came to work side by side with us. Thank you Melissa.

Serving In Two Different Countries

“I strain to reach the end of the race and receive the prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us up to heaven.” Acts 2: 24 NLT

Anticipation filled every part of me as Rod and I drove to visit a friend I had not seen for quite some time. You see, my friend Marilyn lives in Canada, I live in Mexico and we met for coffee in the United States.

You may ask, “What is so special about this friend.” Nearly 24 years ago I sat at a small table in a lunch room at the place we worked. I had only known the Lord for a short time. Across from me was Marilyn openly sharing with me her present pain and struggles.

I had no solution for her other than how I had found comfort in my own life. I shared with her about my friend Jesus and how He had helped me through my difficult times. I then asked if she wanted Jesus to help her also.

After a short prayer, Marilyn committed her life to this Jesus I spoke of. Today Marilyn is also a missionary. Her Jewish heritage has given her a passion to reach out to her own people. Two people in two different countries, serving the same King.

Ready! Set! Go! These are the words we remember well when running a race. Yes, the summer has begun and the race is before us.

We began our summer with a great bunch of staff. Summer interns, returning staff from previous years and volunteers have joined us here at the Tijuana Outreach Center to serve wholeheartedly this summer.

After just one week of summer outreaches under our belts, we see great things taking place within our local Mexican churches. Last week alone we had 151 conferees join us for the summer outreaches and 173 Mexican people recognized their need for the love of Christ in their lives. WOW, and summer has just begun.

Rod, Rebekah and I want to thank you for your many prayers. After much searching we have found a school for Rebekah. She will attend the high school affiliated with the junior high school she now attends. After a brief visit with the principal today, Rod and I both breathed a sign of relief knowing she would be well taken care of. This school will be there to help her every step of the way with her education as well as improving her Spanish.

Rebekah’s grade 9 graduation ceremony and luncheon was a time of celebration by all. Rebekah had a GPA of 9.3 and received a pin for her efforts. Next year will be all Spanish hopefully she can continue to do as well.

We and all the staff here at YUGO continue to cherish your many prayers as we continue on this summer. It is your prayers that give each of us the strength to continue the race set before us.

An Addition To The Family-June 2006

“Your love for one another will prove that you are my disciples.” John 13:35 NLT

Twelve hours on the road, exhausted by the drive, the trip from Stony Plain, Alberta (where my parents live) to Burns Lake, British Columbia (where my daughter Jessica lives) was coming to an end. All the feelings of tiredness disappeared as I looked up and saw my four year old grandson Caleb standing at the window waving at us.

This was the beginning of five fun filled days with my grandbabies. We are no longer the grandparents of one, but two. Alyssa Jo Ann came into the world at 9 lbs 5 oz, May 1, 2006. Spending time with my Mom, Jessica, Ryan, Caleb and Alyssa was a wonderful way to end my one month stay in Canada.

It is always good to return to Canada to renew old friendships, get spoiled by family and get rested up for the upcoming busy summer months. Rod and I traveled back to Canada separately this year due to Rebekah’s schooling. Hopefully next year we will be traveling together as a family again.

This past weekend we took part in MISSIONS FEST Southern California. We were blessed and challenged as we learned more about other countries, cultures and people around the world. I am sure that many were motivated to answer God’s call to reach the lost.

Missions Fest California-Michelle, Andi, Jarad & Rebekah manning the booth
Scott Wesley Brown brought us into a place of worship that captured our souls. Plenary and seminar speakers shared about the countries torn by war, drug cartels, children at risk and Christians being persecuted for their beliefs. But despite these challenges the Christian church continues to grow.

YUGO provides a great opportunity for youth to experience short term, front line missions. Our prayer is that many will be motivated to serve God in missions and challenged to grow spiritually so they can impact the world for Christ.

Rod, Rebekah, I and the rest of the YUGO staff covet your prayers as we enter into another summer of evangelistic outreaches. It will not be easy as different people from different walks of life, with different ideas come together. In love for one another we will set aside our differences to aid in sharing the love of Jesus in Mexico.

Passion Brings Eternal Results-May 2006

"The Lord lives!Blessed be my rock! May God, the rock of my salvation be
exalted!" II Sam 22 4:7

Day by day changes were taking place. What began as a room that collected donations and junk was transformed into a warm inviting place to meet together, laugh together and enjoy the warm decor. Al & Evelyn have been busy renovating, painting and gardening. They came with servant hearts and well be missed by all at the Tijuana outreach center.

While Al & Evelyn were with us, their home church from Gospel Chapel,
Sylvan Lake came to join us in ministry in Mexico. Now this is what you call an energetic bunch. Six adults (eight including Al & Evelyn) and five children took part in several different ministries in three different churches. This included four medical clinics. Way to go Gospel Chapel!

This year the Canadian and US spring breaks fell at different times. This brought about the need to have yet another outreach to facilitate the Canadian teams. Youth and leaders from Center Street Church in Calgary, and Crossroads church in Red Deer plus a cell group from Indiana joined us in Mexicali to evangelize the local churches. Many Mexican will have eternal effects from these that were so passionate to serve.

April 11,2006 Leaders Meeting
Easter/Spring Outreach
26 people made commitments to follow Christ during the first day of ministry

I journaled this information the first week of our second set of outreaches. The week just got better and better. Let me share with you the response from one of our volunteers after I asked him how his day went. Joe told me his day was awesome today five gave their hearts to the Lord in the Sports Ministry he was involved in the park. He shard that after playing games with the youth they then entered into a bible study. One man walked up to them with crutches. He stopped and listened then asked, "What do I have to do to become a Christian"

The park Joe was situated in is a hang out for two gangs. The little brother of a gang leader saw his need to have Jesus as part of his life but his older brother was not ready to give up his life style. Joe shares that they met other Christians that watched the team this past week and want to continue on when the teams return to Canada and the US. May they be filled with boldness and wisdom as they share their faith.

Rebekah has been such a blessing with the teams. She often goes out with then teams and interprets for them. With each team many friends are made. How many youth do you know that e-mail people all over the US and Canada?

Rod and Rebekah will man the fort in Tijuana while I go back to Canada. I will leave Easter morning with my parents. Our daughter Jessica and son in law Ryan are expecting our second grandchild any day now. How I look forward to spending time just being a grandma for a time and catching up with family and friends.

Language Is Not A Barrier For Love-March 2006

“Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance” I Corinthians 13:7

The phone rang! My neighbor, in her broken English shared this prayer request. Pray for Margarita. She just received a call. Either she hand over a large sum of money or her two daughters will be kidnapped. Margarita is a Mexican woman with great wealth.

You can only imagine the fear that is penetrating the heart of this distraught women and her family members. Margarita is a fairly new Christian. She has just recently exchanged a life style of idol worship for a relationship with Christ Jesus. This situation will stretch her faith as she sees the hand of God move on her behalf.

This is only one of the many prayer requests that the women of our Tuesday night bible study bring to the table. In faith each week, we come together and grow together as we study God’s word and pray.

It was February 14, Valentines day, when I shared openly with the ladies that I received so much more from them than I could ever give. They have opened their hearts to a stranger from a foreign land. Language is not a barrier for love.

Week after week I watch these women diligently come to learn more about this Jesus that has set them free from the bondages of idolatry, incest, physical abuse, sexual abuse, mental abuse and the list goes on.

They come from a small village steeped in poverty. Poverty according to your standards and mine, but not theirs. They may live in tiny houses, but they have a bed to sleep in. They have barely enough money to put tortillas on the table, but never go hungry.

Does this rob them from their joy? No, as long as they are fed, have a roof over their heads and have one another they are satisfied. I can learn much from these precious women.

Their infectious smiles and contagious laughter would cause anyone to question where their joy comes from. They would be the first to tell you that their joy comes from knowing and serving the King of Kings, Jesus Christ.

Rod will soon return to us and the work God has called us to in Mexico. We were separated 4 ½ weeks. While in Canada attending Missions Fests, visiting churches and groups Rod shared with many God’s heart for the lost. Many have responded to the call.

My days were filled with contacting groups, tweeking plans and preparing for those that are coming to share the love of Christ with the Mexican people. Gospel Chapel from Sylvan Lake Alberta, Center Street Church from Calgary Alberta, Emmanuel CRC from Langley British Columbia and Cross Roads Church from Red Deer Alberta are just a few that will be the hands and feet of Christ to the Mexican people in the month of March.

It is you, our partners in ministry that give us the strength to continue to do what God has called us to do. Your prayers, words encouragement and faithful giving are the backbone of this ministry.

An Early Christmas-January 2006

“But my life is worth nothing unless I use it for doing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus-the work of telling others the Good News about God’s wonderful kindness and love.” Acts 2: 24 NLT

A little face looked up at me beaming from ear to ear as he clutched his Project Joy shoe box. The days were full handing out over 1,000 gifts at different events. Many groups and individuals from all over Canada and the US joined together in a common purpose of finding just the right toys that brought about great joy for the needy children of Mexico. For some this may be the only gift they will receive.

Christmas came early for the Hoople family! A group of 25 from Santa Anna, California came to Mexico with hearts set on serving. They tackled many projects that needed attending to here at the ranch. One of them was to build a shed to house Rod’s tools. Thank you Calvary Church, you did a great job.

The building of the shed is the first step in cleaning out the common room just outside our apartment to prepare to transform the room into a staff lounge and meeting room. Do you know of a group wanting to be involved in a project? Let us know! The needs here in Mexico are always plentiful.

As Rod, Rebekah and I reflect back to 2005, we can see God’s hand in our lives. We have much to be thankful for in the time we have been here in Mexico serving with YUGO Ministries. We continue to have a passion to share what God is doing in Mexico through ordinary folks such as yourself. Many have come and left challenged to go deeper in their faith and service for Christ.

“We have an awesome privilege to be part of the devine labor taking place on earth. God doesn’t need our help, but He wants to incorporate our small contribution into His Master plan.” Author Unknown

Rebekah is doing very well in school. She is an honor student surrounded by lots of good friends. Due to her schooling Rod will return to Canada for the month of February on his own. He will represent YUGO Ministries in Vancouver, Winnipeg and Edmonton Missions Fests as well as share in churches and small groups. I will remain in Mexico to man the fort and be sure Rebekah is able to get to and from school daily.

The Greatest Gift Ever Given-December 2005

“I bring you good news of great joy for everyone! The Savior-yes, the Messiah, the Lord-has been born tonight in Bethlehem, the city of David!” Luke 2:10,11

The sun seemed to be smiling as I drove down the highway. Glancing at the waves on the beach always brings a feeling of peace and a yearning for more time to enjoy this marvelous creation.

As I entered the store, the sight of Christmas trees and festive décor caught my eye. Memories of past Christmases flooded my thoughts. Candlelight services on Christmas Eve with my family, Christmas morning gift opening after reading the Christmas story with our girls and sharing dinner with the whole Hoople clan on Christmas day. So many rich memories spent with family and friends.

We spent Christmas in Arizona with my (Cheryl) parents John and Gerry

Then the revelation of the greatest gift ever given came to mind. God sent His son into this world as a gift for all of us! Wow, what a reason to celebrate!

This past year serving the Mexican people has given us great purpose and joy. Daily we recognize we are where we are called to be. Rod, Rebekah and I pray that each of you will be filled with blessings of peace and joy this Christmas season.

Mexico Is Home-November 2005

If you help the poor, you are lending to the Lord-and He will repay you!” Proverbs 19:7

Today is Sunday. We had not been to church for a couple weeks due to other commitments. As we arrived we were warmly greeted by our Mexican friends. Soon the sound of worship music filled the air. We were embraced with the feelings of being at home. Yes, Rod, Rebekah and I had just recently shared with each other that Mexico is home.

The message on this particular Sunday morning encouraged us to trust God in our trials. Pastor Mike asked us to remember back one year ago to the trials we were in during that period of our lives. He shared that by walking through the trials and persevering we would be strengthened. It was at this part in the service that Rebekah whispered in my ear and reminded me of the many tears shed when we first moved to Mexico just over a year ago.

The service ended as it did every week with an alter call inviting those that do not know Jesus to come and be prayed for. A young man stood up and walked bravely to the front of the church to pray a prayer of faith asking Jesus to come into his life. This is a regular occurrence on Sunday mornings. Soon this young man and many others that have bravely walked up to the front of the church to be prayed for will be baptized in the ocean followed by a fiesta on the beach.

It is witnessing this hunger in the Mexican people to know Jesus and having the opportunity to be a small part helping them acknowledge their need for a personal relationship with Jesus that excites us about being missionaries in Mexico. And having people like you join us in ministry through taking part in being the hands and feet of Christ with the Mexican people is such a blessing to us.

Part of what we do between outreaches is to stay in contact with U.S. and Canadian churches guiding them into ministries that would best fit with their church body. Some choose construction projects while others want to evangelize or take part in Mercy Ministries.

Keith and Jayne Fenton organized the collection of back packs from St. Albert Alliance Church

St. Alberta Alliance Church from Alberta Canada collected over 400 pounds of school supplies and backpacks. My parents John and Gerry graciously offered to bring the school supplies, back packs and many other boxes of various items to a meeting place in Yuma Arizona. From here we will take them back to Mexico and distribute them to the many needy children in Tijuana and Mexicali.

The Janet Pomeroy Center in San Francisco just donated vans to YUGO. People’s church from Fresno California got wind of a thirft store that was going out of business. Their church body loaded up a semi trailer of clothes that were donated and delivered to YUGO. And the list goes on.

You may ask how you can reach out to the Mexican children. Project Joy is a unique Christmas ministry that invites individuals of all ages to give gift-filled shoeboxes to poor children in Mexico. For more information, or to request a starter kit, please email us at projectjoy@yugomail.org. You may also visit us on our website at www.yugo.org/projectjoy.htm.

With Christmas just around the corner, the excitement of giving is already filling the air. Rod, Rebekah and I want to thank you for your continued support, words of encouragement and many prayers

Give Thanks to The Lord-October 2005

“Give thanks to the Lord and proclaim his greatness. Let the whole world know what
He has done.” Psalm 105:1

October is a time to give thanks to the Lord for the harvest. In the last year we at YUGO Ministries have had 2084 participants come to Mexico (Tijuana, Mexicali and Acuna) to evangelize. As a result 1632 Mexican people made decisions to become Christians. Wow, what a year!

This summer began with a flurry of activities all around us. Staff could be heard talking and laughing. A young lady ventured on to the property and introduced herself to us as Barb. She is fifteen years of age and lives just down the road. Barb speaks perfect English and after a short conversation it was evident that she loves the Lord.

Rebekah and Barbara quickly disappeared together. Could it be that this young lady had been here all along? How good God is to have a friend Rebekah’s age living so close by. We are blessed and have much to be thankful for.

Within days I brought Rebekah to visit Barbara and meet her family. Barb’s mom Sylvia shared with me how Barb too felt lonely and was excited for the girls to get to know each other. Then she shared her story with me how she came to know and love Jesus.

At four years of age Sylvia attended a feeding program that was founded by some local missionaries. The missionaries not only distributed food to the children they also shared the love of Jesus (much like the feeding program YUGO started in the local church here in Lomas San Antonio). It was here that Sylvia accepted Jesus into her heart.

Sylvia got into a church that encouraged her to read her bible daily and pray often so she could grow in her relationship with Jesus Christ. Today Sylvia has a great love for Jesus, her family and her people. She holds bible studies in her home and invites her neighbors to come and find out about this Jesus that means so much to her.

These are the ladies I will study the bible with. Indolisa,Cheryl,Lupita,Silvia

This winter I will join Sylvia at these bible studies reaching out to the neighbors. Learning more of the language and the culture is a goal for our family for this coming year.

Rebekah attends a school that has an English program just 20 minutes from here. I carpool with Sylvia as the girls attend schools just minutes apart from each other. God had a plan when He brought us to this location in Mexico.

Our time in Canada was great. When we arrived at the airport we were greeted by our daughter Jessica with the good news that our second grandchild will be born in April. This was such exciting news. We took part in a family reunion. It was good to reconnect with long lost cousins, Aunts, Uncles.

1,300 Came To Know Jesus-September 2005

Is anyone thirsty? Come and drink-even if you have no money! Come, take your choice of wine or milk-it’s all free! Why spend your money on for that does not give you strength? Why pay for food that does you no good. Listen, and I will tell you where to get food for the soul! Isaiah 55:1, 2 (NLT)

Rod & Brian planning their trip across the border.

Rod and Brian (YUGO missionary) jumped into a van to cross the border to pick up the speaker for the upcoming outreach at the San Diego airport. Unfortunately Rod did not have his passport with him. To his dismay, he was not allowed entry into the United States.

As I, Rod walked back into Mexico I thought about how all alone I was in a city of two million plus people. I did remember a taxi stand where we rode to the downtown area of Tijuana with our summer staff earlier in the year. So off I went. As I took a few wrong turns, I was fearful it would soon get dark. I began praying for Gods help. This man approached me and offered a woman (oops wrong area) I declined but accepted his directions as he told me the next street over was the one I wanted. I caught a cab and phoned Cheryl to pick me up at the bottom of the cement hill on the way to our house.

I, Cheryl went driving down the bumpy roads to rescue Rod from having to walk up the steep hill. I spotted him! Just behind him was a lady I recognized from our neighborhood church. I stopped and offered her a ride also. She spoke no English and we spoke some Spanish, enough to find out where she lived.

I tried not to stare as I noticed how her face had become so deformed since the first time I had seen her. She was now missing an eye as well as having open sores all over her face. “Could it be skin cancer?” I asked myself. “Could these open sores not be stopped? What kind of medical care was there for those that were so poor?” These were the questions that rolled around in my mind. “Eeks! Would she soon lose the other eye?”

I came back to reality when I heard her say, “Aqui.” meaning here in Spanish. We dropped her off at the humble structure she called home. She showed her gratitude by reaching out and hugging me whispering “Dios te bendiga” God bless you in Spanish, in my ear. And then to my surprise she kissed me on the cheek.

A part of me felt I should have been repulsed by the open sores that covered her face. Another part of me was in awe at the joy and gratitude this woman conveyed for picking her up and driving her home. “Would I have that much joy if I was that sick?”

Eva has a personal relationship with Jesus that gives her joy in the midst of many trials. This summer over 1,300 came to the knowledge of their need for a relationship with Jesus.

Morinville Alliance Church, Muir Lake Alliance Church, Devon Alliance Church from Alberta and Faith Baptist from Regina are Canadian churches and are just a few of the many churches that joined us in ministry this past 10 weeks of ministry. Morinville Alliance holds a special place in our hearts as this is the youth group that Rebekah attended when we lived in Canada.

Rebekah and her new friend Barb took on the challenge of translating for the Canadian team that went to our local church in Lomas San Antonio to reach out to the Mexican people. This is also Eva’s home church. I asked and found out she had not attended the woman’s ministry activities. Maybe she did not have the strength to walk the distance to the church.

Rod, Rebekah and I will go back to Canada for three weeks in September. We are excited about seeing family and friends. We will take part in a family reunion and many other gatherings that will bring us up to date on what’s happening in the lives of those we love and care for.

Independence Day Celebration-August 2005

We all piled into the van to cross over to the other side. After many weeks in Mexico a trip to the United States feels like you are embarking on a real adventure. In tow was our new family: four interns and other YUGO staff that have joined us for the summer.

The date was July 3, 2005 and the stop of the day would be a church service at Shadow Mountian where Dr. David Jeremiah would share great biblical truths with us. The service included an Independence Day celebration.

Soldiers entered into the building dressed in civil war uniforms. The sound of the bugle captured our attention. Then not a sound could be heard in the whole building. Silence, complete silence followed by the sound of gunshots.

We witnessed a proud nation celebrating their democracy. As a Canadian it is an honor to work hand in hand with our neighboring country reaching the lost in Mexico.

Tears were shed by many as the national anthem played and memories of lost loved ones came to mind. Personally my heart ached for the loved ones we left behind in Canada.

I listened intently to words of this well known hymn, “Glory, Glory, Alleluia our Lord is marching on. There are so many lost, His message they must hear…” The words of this hymn penetrated my heart.

I looked to the left and then to the right and knew many others had left family and loved ones to fight the fight. Some carried guns while others carry the truth of God’s Word.

“Fight the good fight for what we believe. Hold tightly to the eternal life that God has given you, which you have confessed so well before many witnesses.” I Timothy 6:10

Teams from all over the US and Canada continue to come and join us in sharing the love of Christ. People are coming to experience the love of God daily through these youth that have given up chunks of their summers to come and reach out to the lost.

This year YUGO started a new work. 208 people stepped out of their comfort zones into the 114 degree weather in Acuña, Mexico to share their love with the Mexican people. 377 people came to know Jesus in a personal way.

Rod and I continue to be stretched with our new responsibilities. We know that the stretching with bring growth that we pray will be used to glorify our Master.

Rebekah is excited as we have taken a step of faith and registered her for school for the fall. It has been a year of growth for Rebekah. She has quickly grasped the language and never ceases to amaze Rod and I with how well she can carry on a conversation in Spanish.

As we celebrate our one year of service as full time missionaries with YUGO, we praise God for your continued support, words of encouragement and many prayers. We could not have done it with out you.

Missionaries To Africa-July 2005

“We must take the first step by faith and then another, not knowing exactly where it will lead us, but trusting that our omniscient, loving God has our best interests in mind.” Charles Stanley.

I guess most of us may think that these words are for people that are brave or for those that are heroes. No, these words are the words we need to follow to fulfill the purpose we have been called to.

The Compeans are a family that have taken the first step and then another. They were the first family that we befriended in Mexico with a daughter Rebekah’s age. Their children were a part of the YUGO youth group that took place in our home on Friday nights that was run by Michelle (YUGO missionary). They hold a very dear place in our hearts.

The trailer was packed and we were on the road after many months of trying to plan a time to be together with the Compeans. This would be the last weekend we could spend time together as the Compean family would be leaving for five months to continue their work as missionaries in Africa. Their pets Shadow (dog) and Guacamole (iguana) share our domain.

While at the kitchen sink Kelli’s mom shared with me the fear of her daughter going to Africa. Ed and Kelli had sat their parents down and made known to them that there were many abductions in Africa. If such a phone call should come, their parents were told not to pay a ransom as the possibility of their return was slim. I can only imagine how our parents would have reacted to such a statement.

We proudly joined the Compean family in their last church service at their home church where they openly shared the ministry they would be involved in. They will experience the culture and needs of Africa people and then come back and train missionaries to go into Sudan and Uganda to reach those that have been affected by the Lords Resistance Army. This is a rebel group in Northern Uganda that has been killing and abducting children for years.

Tears rolled down my face as I selfishly thought of how much I would miss this family. They have been not only our friends but also great mentors in our lives.

YUGO’s purpose as a missions organization is to motivate youth to taste and see what missions is all about. Some of these that come and join us this summer may be called to go into the depths of Africa to serve the lost. Some may be called to go home and pray for those that are called to the field. We each are called in different directions with the gifts that have been given to us.

Rod, Rebekah and I will wear many hats this summer while joining other staff in serving the youth that join us in Tijuana. We only have four summer interns here at the Tijuana Outreach Center this summer. This leaves us room for volunteers to join us in ministry.

Franz and Karen and their children from Alberta have joined us for five weeks. Franz is a mechanic and has blessed many with his abilities to keep our vehicles running and in tip top shape. Karen has joined the kitchen staff. The job in the kitchen seems to be never ending. Thank you Franz and Karen!

We are excited to share that we will have lots of Canadian company this summer. Rebekah has a couple friends that will come on separate occasions. Bryce and Jayleen will spend time with us on the field as well as the youth from Morinville Alliance. Sounds like a great summer in store for all of us.

Loving The Unloveable-June 2005

I had heard the stories of a woman named Mary. Stories of how she tormented one of our YUGO missionaries. Sharon had shared with me how day and night Mary would throw rocks at her home. She also shared that Mary had come into her home and robbed her.

The day had finally come when I would meet Mary. I was excited to have a chance to get to know this woman.

There she was, this woman I had heard so much about. I looked into Mary’s eyes, I saw such gentleness. How could this woman that had been so mean look so gentle and peaceful? I could see Christ shining through her eyes.

I asked Mary if I could interview her. She did not mind. Though she was very busy serving those around her and caring for her new born child, she gave me every minute she could spare.

Mary went way back to as far as she could remember. She openly shared her greatest pain and shame with me. “I grew up with out a dad,” she said, “At the age of five I was raped.” I can only imagine the pain that filled Mary’s heart.

As the years progressed, Mary chose to cover up her pain with food and drugs. She had been told by her own brother that nobody could ever love her because she was overweight. The lies continued to haunt her.

She went from one unhealthy relationship to another looking for love. In her travels she found a man that she gave her heart to. This man had given his heart to another though. His true love was the master that he served through witchcraft and drugs.

Life became more and more difficult. By now Mary had two children. At times the pain was more than she could handle. She struggled with thoughts of killing her children and herself, but was never able to succeed.

This whole time Sharon lived next door to Mary. She continued to love her and share with her how much Jesus loved her. One time Mary remembers Sharon reading Psalm 91 to her. “Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty…”

Mary continued in the life style she was comfortable with. After all, she had a reputation to uphold. She was considered the meanest woman in the ejido (village). She carried a gun with her at all times, robbed who she willed and continued her path of destruction.

At the age of 37 Mary found out she was pregnant. She did NOT want this baby. In her fifth month of pregnancy she took medications to try to abort the child. It was here that she heard these words, “I command you-be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you where ever you go.”

From time to time in Mary’s life she had heard people come into her path and share the love of Jesus with her. She tried to surrender her life into the hands of Jesus. She had been told she was unlovable. How could this Jesus love a woman that was addicted to drugs and sold her body for prostitution? Guilt kept her in bondage.

January 25,2005 screaming could be heard in the ejido of Sinaloa. Mary gave birth to a son on the floor of her kitchen. Sharon assisted with the delivery and was given the honor of naming baby Joshua.

Mary fell in love with this gift that God had sent her. She felt true love and fought the government to keep her child. She realized her way of life was no longer working. In her place of desperation to save her son from the hands of the government she surrendered her life to Jesus.

Mary is a changed woman. That decision to surrender her life has changed her life. Daily she receives healing from the pain from her past. Sharon continues to wrap her arms around her and guide her in her new relationship with Jesus.

Mary pleads with me and others to keep the people in her ejido in prayer. Drugs are like an epidemic she tells me. Drugs and poverty are all over Mexico destroying families. More orphanages are being built daily to house the children.

YUGO now has two children’s home (orphanages) that have quickly been filled. Others are waiting for more homes so they can have a family. If you would like to sponsor one of these children, please feel free to contact us or go to our web site at yugo.org.

Traveling Gypsies-May 2005

“So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and steady, always enthusiastic about the Lord’s work, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless." I Corinthians 15:58

The Easter/Spring outreaches with YUGO Ministries were drawing near as a number of us caravanned together to Mexicali. The skies were gray and the chance of rain loomed in the air. Memories of strong winds and heavy rains on our first missions trip with YUGO were in the forefront of our minds. The memory of slipping, sliding and then falling in the mud brought back fond memories.

The rain held back and the sun shone brightly as excitement filled the air. We and many other staff were as Gypsies traveling the land and setting up camp. We prepared for the many youth that would soon make their own memories to go back home and share with others their experiences of what God is doing in Mexico.

Forty youth from Center Street Church in Calgary, Alberta joined us in Mexicali. Some partnered with a church in Mexicali. With combined efforts and lots of prayer Pastor Loretto’s congregation will have grown and the Center Street Church youth will go back to the Great White North forever changed.

Others joined missionary, Sharon in her outreach to the women and children of the Ejido (village) of Sinaloa. Lots of energy is brought by the youth to run, play and give capuchis (piggy backs) to the children. A fresh out pouring of energy and boldness to display and share the love of God is always welcomed by all.

Many hands joined together to reach out to the lost and needy in the nearby communities. One set of helping hands left an everlasting impression on me. His name is Erik. He joined me daily to help make picnic lunches in the sandwich room for the teams that would go out and share the gospel in the afternoons. Let me share with you his response to his time in Mexico.

“During this missions trip. I helped bring someone to Christ for the first time and gave my first sermon. I can only say that I believe I have finally found purpose and worth in my life. I will never forget how this feels like. I wish to continue serving the Lord in all areas of my life and in missions at home and abroad.”

Not only does YUGO Ministries offer an opportunity to bring the lost into a personal relationship with Jesus and connects them with a local church where they can be discipled. It also brings people like Erik and ourselves into a new realm of service and purpose.

We have much to be thankful for. Prayers have been answered. The position of Office Manager with YUGO Canada has been filled by Marylyn from Legal, Alberta. Marylyn spent a week with the staff in YUGO Ministries head office in California training for her new position. She later joined us in Tijuana so we could show her some of the other ministries YUGO is involved with. Join us in knowing we are all in good hands.

If you have any questions please feel free to call Marylyn. YUGO Canada’s address and phone number will remain the same but the office has been moved to Marylyn’s home in Legal, Alberta.

The year has just begun and many changes have taken place. April 9, 2005 was the grand opening of our first two children’s homes. It was a day to celebrate as 17 children now have new homes. Many more await housing. The ground was broken and the building of the next two homes will soon begin.

Moving On-March 2005

"God blesses the people that patiently endure testing. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him." James 1:1,2 (TLT

Wow, what a year! Let me recap some of the events that have taken place in our lives and the growth in the ministry of YUGO Canada.

January 2004, YUGO Canada was birthed. Charitable status came into being eight days after paperwork was completed. This is unheard of! We were told this process should take at the very least 3 to 6 months. Now, that is God at work.

Mid January 2004 we placed our home of twelve years on the market. The first couple that looked at it bought it. We felt blessed to know that the hand of God was with us on with this sale.

April 1, 2004 we handed over the keys to the new owners of our home and proceeded to Mexico for one month. We joined other staff doing the background work for 500 youth from Canada and the U.S. who came to Mexicali as part of the Easter/Spring evangelistic outreaches.

Many Mexican people came to know Jesus in a personal way during this these two weeks. Youth went home changed. Some experienced short term missions for the first time. It was our privilege to plant seeds in the hearts of our future generation to be a part of the Great Commission.

While in Mexico we visited the Tijuana Outreach Center, the place we would call home come August, 2004. I remember being shown the apartment that we would live in and glancing at the living room furniture. The furniture was quite tattered. I knew we would be bringing only personal items with us and was grateful that there was furniture. God had other plans.

Two days later a church group from California came to build a home for a poor Mexican family. They brought with them a load of donations. I must share with you, we are now the proud owners of a lovely couch complete with a matching valance, a recliner, 2 lamps, a round end table with a matching skirt and a center piece. God knows our needs and supplies them.

Transitioning is tough. It was hard to leave behind family and friends and relocate to a ranch out in the country after living in the most friendly small town one could imagine. Yes, it was hard to leave behind family who love us and were concerned about us moving to a third world country.

And yes, it was hard to move away from a loving church body were we could understand the language and enter into the worship and share hugs over small talk. God has been faithful to send us new friends to share a common vision to spread the love of God to the Mexican people. We are blessed.

With all these blessings have come hardship in this time of trailblazing. We have all been on a learning curve with starting a new ministry. Our office staff, the McIntosh family have struggled diligently to maintain the YUGO office as well as continue on with their busy lifestyles. Our sincerest thanks for all they have done to get YUGO Canada up and running. And many thanks to you, our partners in ministry for all your patience as YUGO Canada continues to grow.

Rod, Rebekah and I are not the only Canadian missionaries on the field. Last summer 4 of our 10 of our summer interns at the Tijuana Outreach Center were Canadian.

During MissionsFast in Edmonton last year, we met the Huebert family. We told them about YUGO, and they have just recently joined YUGO on staff in Ensenada.

Amanda heard about YUGO through MissionsFast in Winnipeg last year, and she has joined us on staff working with the children in Sharon Nelsons ministry in Mexicali.

This has been an exciting year. Rod, Rebekah and I have just spent the past 5 weeks in Canada reconnecting with family and friends. We have represented YUGO at MissionsFasts Vancouver and Edmonton sharing our passion of reaching the Mexican people for Christ. There have also been opportunities to share in churches, cell groups and youth groups what God is doing in Mexico. Canadians have a great interest in what God is doing in Mexico.

None of this could have happened without your help. Your prayers, words of encouragement and finances have kept us on the field doing what God has called us to do. Your job is as important as ours. He may have called us to go, but He has called you to be our senders.

We personally want to thank you for partnering with us on our first year with YUGO.

Christmas Next To The Tijuana Dump-January 2005

"But thanks be to God who made us his captives and leads us along in Christ’s triumphal procession. Now where ever we go He uses us to tell others about the Lord and to spread the Good News like perfume." 2 Cor 2:14 NLT

The day finally arrived when we would join Pastor Martin and others giving out Project Joy Christmas shoe boxes near the Tijuana dump. It was not that many years ago I saw video clips of others actually giving out these gifts to children in the dump amongst the garbage. The Mexican government has recently set up laws that no longer permit families to live in the dumps.

Marcia and Wayne Cudmore, a couple from our home church in Alberta, Canada joined us on this mission. They brought with them two large suitcases full of items. God bless you St. Albert Alliance Church and others that gave so generously. Many children were blessed because of your giving.

As we approached the dump we saw many birds circling above. The smell of the garbage wafted past. Soon we saw many children and adults appear. They knew the routine. They followed the caravan of vehicles until we stopped.

After singing bible songs and watching the children swinging the sticks at the piñatas and scrambling after candies, the time for handing out the Christmas shoe boxes began. The kids were excited as they fell into lines according to age groups.

As mothers with children in tow began to line up in the group we were with (3 to 5 year olds) I began to watch the children’s faces. One particular little boy opened his box and smiling at me began to show me his treasures. What an incredible blessing to have been able to take part in giving to these needy children.

You are the ones that have provided us with this opportunity to serve in this capacity. We want to thank each and every one of you for your giving hearts. I am sure if these children could they would thank you too.

A friend sent me some statistics with a Christmas message on the e-mail. Let me share what was sent to me. Did you know that if you have food in your refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof over your head and a place to sleep… you are richer than 75% of the world.

Wow, how blessed we are to live where we live. It’s hard for me to believe that we are richer than 75% of the world. Living in Mexico, a third world country has been a real eye opener for Rod, Rebekah and I.

As we enter into this Christmas season, we know that the Christmas shoes boxes contain gifts that are temporal. We know that the greatest gift of all is the gift the God sent us, his son Jesus. And this gift is eternal. No more poverty, pain, hunger or shame when we get to heaven.

Rebekah, Rod and I will have spent Christmas with my parents in Apache Junction, Arizona by the time you get this letter. We will open gifts, eat too much turkey and feel abundantly loved by family and friends.

Then we will join other missionaries in YUGO’s Christmas outreach in Mexicali, Mexico. Our prayer is that many will find the greatest gift of all.

Christmas Eve By Candle Light-December 2004

“That night some shepherds were in the fields outside the village, guarding their flocks of sheep. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lords glory surrounded them. They were terribly frightened, but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid.” He said, “I bring you good news of great joy for everyone! The Savior – yes, the Messiah, the Lord – has been born tonight in Bethlehem, the city of David!” Luke 2:8,12

The night was warm. We had been invited by a local pastor to join in on one of their Sunday night services. Driving to the church was an adventure. The roads (paths in the dirt) were filled with crevices and holes. It looked as though the church was built on the tallest hill possible. My thoughts were on the old van we were traveling in. Will it make it up this hill? It did!

As we entered the church, a small handful of people had gathered. The church itself could hold many. It was warm and inviting. We received hugs and handshakes by the few that recognized us.

The service was beginning. To our delight, candles began to be lit all around us. It felt like a candle light service on Christmas Eve back in Canada. This was just a regular routine here in Mexico when the power goes out.

The seats began to fill as the locals made their way to the church. Many had walked long distances to join in this time of worship.

I watched curiously as these Mexican people who had walked so far, were filled with enthusiasm. They sang and prayed from the depths of their souls. Their excitement of being together and worshipping together intrigued me.

There were no excuses. The desire to be together, sharing fellowship and learning more about Jesus broke down all barriers. They did not stay home because the church was too far to travel (as most have to walk). They did not stay home because the electricity was off in the village. They did not stay home because the hill to the church was too great to climb.

These Mexican people have experienced first hand what it is like to be in fellowship with their Creator and His people. Nothing keeps them away from meeting, singing and being encouraged by God’s word.

We look around and see the Mexican people around us with so little, but with so much joy. Their joy is not found in their processions. Where do they get it we ask? It is in knowing and having a personal relationship with their Creator.

This Christmas season as we will not be home for Christmas, we are still thankful for the many blessings we have. We are thankful for Rebekah and her new friend Haley. We are thankful for the many that He has placed in our lives here in Mexico.

As you celebrate with your loved ones this Christmas, remember to be thankful for the greatest gift of all, the birth of Jesus.

We pray you will find peace and joy as you enter into this Christmas season filled with numerous activities. We will miss you all!

Amanda To Mexicali-November 2004

“Therefore since we are surrounded by a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily hinders our progress. And let us run with endurance the race that God has set before us.” Heb 12:1

How could I recognize the face of this person I had never met? Was the picture I had of her up to date? Did the plane come in early? Maybe it was late? All these questions raced through my mind as I entered the doors of the San Diego airport.

We were on a mission to pick Amanda from Manitoba, Canada. Amanada is our newest Canadian YUGO missionary. Rod, Rebekah and I had the privilege of delivering Amanada to Mexicali to join Sharon (YUGO missionary) in reaching out to the needy children of the Ejido (village) of Sinoloa.

Being the Canadian Representatives for other missionaries that will join us and others on the field, I took it upon myself to share with Amanada some of the struggles she will encounter as well as the victories that would follow. I was also able to share with Amanada, with great confidence, that when she emerges from the fiery trials, she will know God is in control. She will learn “to cease striving and know that He is God.” Psalm 46:10.

Amanda will learn to embrace the knowledge of knowing that her partners in ministry will keep her held up in prayer. She will learn as we have learned that no matter how trying our circumstances, God works to make them turn out for our good.

In the midst of our weaknesses we see miracles happening all around us. It is a blessing to work with and encourage local pastors.

Recently we visited a pastor and his wife from Rosarito. Pastor Narcis shared his story of how he led an alcoholic to a relationship with Christ. When we met this man, Chuy, he had a sparkle in his eyes. He had found what he had been looking for. Where the alcohol could not satisfy him, Jesus did.

We had the opportunity to help another pastor and his wife do some painting in their new home. This home was built by YUGO teams that have come to Mexico to be a part of the Construction Ministry. Pastor Juan and Kerry are expecting a baby in January. What a gift it would be to Juan and Kerry if they could have this home finished before the baby arrived.

Rod and I had a conversation with the pastor of the small church we attend in Rosarito. The church is trying to purchase new property so they can build and accommodate more people in the services. At present we are full to over flowing in the tiny room we meet in. Pastor Mike and his wife Sarah have a vision to bring the Mexican people to Christ and then send them out to reach their own people.

Rod joined others from the church on an outreach to the lost in San Vicente. They handed out food, clothes and the message of eternal life to the migrant workers that worked in the local fields.

These are just a few of the activities that are taking place here in Mexico. Our days are filled with opportunities to reach out to those around us. You too can join us in this ministry. You may ask, how? It is your prayers, words of encouragement and financial support that give Rod, Rebekah and I the desire to continue to do what God has called us to do. Thank you!

The End Of A Great Summer-September 2004

“These trials are only to test your faith, to show that it is strong and pure. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold - and your faith is far more precious to God than mere gold. So if your faith remains strong after being tried by fiery trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.” 1 Peter 1:7

The summer outreaches left lasting impressions. Rod and I daily helped prepare picnic lunches for teams as they spent their afternoons and evenings working with the local churches. Our rewards for our small part in preparing for those that went out on the field was the opportunity to hear team members testimonies on their return in the evenings.

Daily we heard stories of men, women, youth, and children that were meeting Jesus on a personal level. This summer alone there were 1296 that responded to the gospel.

One day Rod and I went to visit a team from Westlock, Alberta, Canada. (Just one half hour from where we used to live in Canada.) We watched as the Canadian women taught the Mexican women how to do crafts as well as teach them lessons from the bible.

Not far away we could hear laughter and singing as others reached out in love to the children. More of the team joined the youth at the local beach of Rosarito playing soccer. Plus they also had a construction team that worked every day on building the womens rehabilitation home (El Faro).

As I watched these Canadians that had driven so far to give so much, I was filled with joy. I knew many of these lives would be changed. The Mexicans, because they have been presented the opportunity to come into a deep relationship with Jesus and see first hand the love of Christ through others. The Canadians because they have witnessed, possibly for the first time ever, bringing others into eternity.

Now summer has come to an end and life has slowed down. We have found new routines. Rod daily joins Tom and George (YUGO Missionaries) to work on the orphanage. I study Spanish and work with Rebekah on her schooling. Some of this includes learning to boogie board at the near by beach. Great way to get in those hours for Physical Education, wouldn’t you say?

Patti (YUGO Missionary) and I will be cooking meals for the Bible School as well as groups that come on weekends to do ministry in the nearby villages.

Just this past weekend a group came to Tijuana from Santa Cruz, California. They built one home, finished another that they had begun earlier in the year and worked on the orphanage.

Rebekah has joined Michelle Miller (YUGO Missionary) with teaching English in a nearby local church. Rebekah is like a sponge. She easily learns Spanish. It is Rod and I that need prayer in this area.

We have joined a local church, one that translates the services. The pastor gave each of us a Spanish/English bible and a worship CD. I ache to join in when I hear the worship music being sung in Spanish. This is good incentive to continue on and learn the language.

We have had many struggles with this adjustment period. Imagine having little red worms coming out of your waters taps. YUCK! How about three flat tires within twelve hours. OOPS! The roads are really rough. I could go on and on. But on the other hand we sense a peace as we know we are where we are supposed to be.

We are grateful for your many prayers. Your incoming e-mails and letters have been of great encouragement to us.

God Is Calling His People-July 2004

"So two good things will happen-the needs of the Christians in Jerusalem will be met, and they will joyfully express their thanksgiving to God. You will be glorifying God through your generous gifts. For your generosity to them will prove that you are obedient to the Good News of Christ.” II Corinthians 9:12,13

Many thanks to our valued partners in ministry. Our financial support is almost in place. We presently sit at 85 to 90%. Let us celebrate together as the Lord releases Rod, Rebekah and myself into full time ministry in Tijuana, Mexico. We are blessed by the amount of family and friends that are partnering with us in sharing the love of Jesus with the Mexican people.

Breaking new ground has been very difficult in some ways and very rewarding in others. As YUGO Canada continues to grow and expand, we thank you for your continued patience and support. We are all still learning.

Many Canadian churches have come forth recently with groups of youth and adults wanting to take part in reaching out to the Mexican people. It is exciting to see Gods plan unfolding in the lives of His people. It is His plan to see the Mexican people come to know Him in a personal way.

In August of this year the Westlock Gospel Chapel will join us in Tijuana to do some Construction Ministry as well as evangelism.

In January of 2005 St. Albert Alliance Church (our home church) will bring a team to Mexico to do a dentistry outreach. We look forward to renewing old relationships while ministering together.

God is calling His people in Canada to go forth and share the Good News to every tribe, nation, every tongue, every people. From province to province our youth are rising up and going forth in obedience. They are sacrificing their Christmas, Easter and summer holidays to obey the call of God on their lives.

Over 40 youth from Centre Street Church in Calgary sacrificially gave of themselves this past spring to work with the Santa Maria Church in Mexicali, Mexico. The pastor of the Santa Maria Church, Pastor Loretto had his congregation partner with the youth of Centre Street Church sharing the love of Jesus Christ with the lost in the city of Mexicali.

We all gained much from having the opportunity to work with Pastor Loretto Beltran. This man of God showed us the true culture of the Mexican people. He demonstrated the love of God by showing us the importance of relationships with those around you.

Pastor Loretto’s wife and a couple of the ladies from their church prepared lunch for over 45 of us. We ate large portions of delicious chicken, rice and beans. As I looked around at his humble home made of mud and straw (this type of Mexican home is called an adobe and the walls are 12 inches thick) I was overwhelmed at the generosity of these people who materially have so little, but give so much.

It was a little while back that I voiced my concern with learning the language when we got to Mexico. A very wise lady that was born in Mexico had an answer for me. Her reply was, “Cheryl, it won’t take long to understand the language. Sometimes culture is most difficult to learn and understand. The Latin American culture involves much emotion and what is not important to foreigners is so important to the local people.”

Our goal above all else is to daily draw closer to our Lord Jesus Christ in a personal way so we can be transformed into His likeness. Our character will be shaped into His likeness the deeper our relationship gets with Him. Only then can we as a family be affective in meeting the needs of the Mexican people.

If you have any thoughts or information you want to share with us we will leave you our mailing address and e-mail address while we are stationed in Tijuana.

Our next few weeks will be spent with family and friends celebrating the marriage of our daughter Jessica to Ryan. We will spend a couple weeks resting and enjoying good company with the beautiful scenery.

The past couple months have been exciting yet sad. There have been farewell parties for Rod, Rebekah and I. We have an incredible support group of family and friends. All will be dearly missed.

Obeying The Call-June 2004

“I assure you that everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or property, for my sake and the Good News, will receive now in return, a hundred times over, houses, sisters, mothers, children, and property-with persecutions. And in the world to come they will have eternal life.” Mark 10:29,30

Let me share with you our dream and how God brought it about. Nearly 22 years ago I saw my first missionary in a church service. I was awed by the work she was a part of. I thought I would love the opportunity to do the same someday.

Nearly two years later I heard God “calling” me. In the scriptures He says, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to all creation.” (Mark 16:15) But who was I, a single mom with a three-year-old child. He continued to nudge me and encourage me and I went.

I received training with Youth With a Mission in New Jersey. This training brought about the privilege of going on three short-term missions trips. These trips to Guatemala, El Salvador and Jamaica were life changing for me. I saw many come to know Jesus Christ in a personal way. When it was time to leave I knew that I had left a piece of my heart behind with the Latino people.

After returning back to Canada, the passion to go was placed on the back burner with the need to continue on in everyday life. As a single parent I poured my life into my daughter, family, friends and my church.

After a time I met and married Rod. Five years ago we went on our first short term frontline missions trip. Together through YUGO Ministries U.S., we went to Mexicali, Mexico. Now we both saw many come to know Christ in a personal way. These people were so hungry for the gospel.

What was once my dream became our dream. We know this dream lies beyond our comfort zone. It means leaving what feels comfortable to achieve the dream. We are just normal folks. Who are we to be called missionaries?

As we continue to walk the calling God has placed upon our hearts, we will run into many obstacles. One will be finances. To raise your own support as a faith based missionary is VERY humbling. But as we continue on in faith and watch our Father bring forth the finances needed, He will be honored.

YUGO Ministries Canada wants us to have 100% of our support raised or pledged before they will allow us to go to the missions field (in Mexico). We are at 65%. If you feel led to join us as partners in ministry but have not responded, now is the time! Our goal is to leave Canada by July 23rd. God bless you as you continue to give and see the kingdom of God expand.

The need in the mission’s field is great. Children daily go without food, clothing or shelter. The greatest need of all is to be loved and cared for. “I want you to share your food with the hungry and welcome the poor wanderers into your homes. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help.” Isaiah 58:7

Next month, YUGO’s first children’s home (orphanage) will be finished. Soon it will be filled to the brim with needy children. The Palaus are normal folks like Rod and I that have heard the call to go, and they will be the house parents for these children. George and Stacey will be the hands and feet of Jesus that that will feed, cloth, love and care for these children.

God uses all kinds of average people just like you and Rod and I. Recently we read the testimony of a young high school girl from Airdrie. She wrote, “I think after being here I am definitely more likely to be involved in missions. I have never been on a mission’s trip before and have never realy never really been involved in ministering the gospel. If God calls me to go to a different country or anywhere for that matter. I want to be willing and able to go.”

You ask, how can a normal person like me be a part of God’s plan in meeting the needs of the Mexican people? There are many ways! You can join us for a week of ministry. You too can feed, clothe, care for and love the children.

Can you swing a hammer? A team from Santa Cruz, California built a house for a Mexican family in three days. Have some extra cash? Send it! YUGO has many places that could use your finances for eternal value. You too can come back changed!

Rod and I sincerely hope you will come visit us in Mexico. Come for Christmas or your summer vacation. The temperature will be +15, and we can have a barbeque or go to the beach, or join together in ministry. Just hearing from you will be great encouragement to us.

Shining Stars In Mexico-May 2004

“Those who are wise will shine as bright as the sky, and those who turn many to righteousness will shine like stars forever.” Daniel 12:3 (NLT)

Stars stand out at night against the black sky. We observe them because they shine so brilliantly in contrast with everything else in the heavens. Like the stars, God’s people stand out in a dark world. Their words, actions, and lives drastically contrast with those of people living in a dark world of sin. If you follow Jesus, don’t expect to fit into the world. Your life will stand out like a star in the heavens. (NLT)

Many more stars are shining in Mexico. Over 400 Mexican people asked Jesus into their hearts during the Easter and Spring outreaches in Mexicali, Mexico through YUGO Ministries.

We have just recently returned back to Canada after a one month stay in Mexico. This time was filled with many life changing events.

Our first week in Mexico we joined other missionaries on staff doing background preperation work so others could experience front line, hands on evangelism in the local villages.

One responsibility Rod, Rebekah and I took very seriously was preparing picnic lunches for 521 youth and adults who daily went out and shared the love of Jesus with the Mexican people. Do you have any idea how many sandwiches 521 people require. Well over 700 hundred per day! We are grateful for the many hands that pitched in and helped.

One day I stopped to ponder this task of making sandwiches for so many. I looked around and stopped to listen to the many stories. These youth were excited about their experiences with bringing the Mexican peoplChrist.

One group shared about the village they were ministering in. This village hadn’t had a missionary visit them in over eighteen years. These Mexican people were thrilled to have the gospel shared with them. Many of these villagers were touched with the eternal truth of God’s word. They heard the words, “Christo te ama” meaning “Christ loves you” in English.

This brought back many memories of how Rod and I felt on our first missions trip with YUGO Ministries five years earlier. I then knew being a part of having others experience front line missions was a great calling in our lives.

Did you know that many of the people at the first week of outreach were Canadians. We had groups from Centre Street Church and Calgary First Baptist Church from Calgary, Bal Moral Bible Chapel from Red Deer and Airdire Kionania Christian School from Airdrie. Yeah Canada!

Rod and I as the representatives from YUGO Canada were ecstatic to see so many Canadians “En fuego para Cristo” or in English “On fire for Christ”.

Rebekah continues to have a great love for the Mexican children. Daily she would join YUGO’s missionary Sharon Nelson in the Ejido of Sinaloa. Rebekah joined Sharon in feeding the children, teaching them Bible stories in the park and of course, just plain having too much fun. I went to visit Sharon one afternoon. We heard much giggling and laughter. When we went to investigate, I stopped short in my tracks. There, right before my eyes, were all the kids covered in mud. Rebekah had this sheepish look on her face, not sure what my reaction would be. In Canada we have snowball fights. In Mexicali they have mud fights. We thank God for running water, especially in Mexico.

Our second week of outreach was equally as exciting. With only 120 at the outreach Rod, Rebekah and I joined other staff taking part in a children’s ministry in a nearby village. As the week progressed we drew closer to the children. It didn’t take long to realize the hugh barrier ahead of us not knowing much of the language or the culture. We have much to learn.

We were able to sneak in some family time with Rod’s sister and family in Los Angeles as well as help participate in celebrating my dad’s 70th birthday in Arizona.

The remainder of our trip was spent in Tijuana with other missionaries. We had the opportunity to see where we will live and work. What an honor to be able to serve the Mexican people.

A Passion For Missions-March 2004

Acts 1:8 NLT “ But when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, you will receive power and will tell people about me everywhere in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Let me share with you our latest miracle. We listed our home and the first couple who looked at it purchased it. It is very evident that God’s hand is in this.

Have you ever stepped into a room and felt energy and excitement flowing through your inner most being. I have and I want to share it with you.

This year was Missions Fest Edmonton’s tenth anniversary. Rod and I had the opportunity to help man YUGO Canada’s information booth in the Shaw Conference Center.

There was excitement in the air. God had been working and placing his call on the heart of His people. Many from all over Canada caught the vision of God’s Great Harvest.

One of the key note speakers, Floyd McClung shared the simple truth of God’s love for the lost. He shared it had nothing to do with your ability but about how available you were.

These words pierced my own heart. At times I feel like Moses with his feelings of inadequacy but daily the Lord encourages me to continue on.

Did you know we were all designed for passion that brings pleasure. We all have the capacity to go nuts over something. What is your passion?

Mine is missions. If you have a chance to go on a missions trip, TAKE IT! People find passion for serving once they have experienced short term missions.

YUGO missionary, Stacey Fredrick has found her passion. She has a burden for the women that are released from the Le Mesa Prison. These women will return to their life styles of drugs and prostitution if they are not given the opportunity to truly start over.

Stacey has a burden to start a home for these women. The name of the home will be El Faro, which is light house in English. Stacey’s hope is that these women will become lights in their world after they go through a 12 step recovery program.

Hudson Taylor said, “ God’s work done God’s way will never lack God’s supply.” I thank God for those that have partnered with us. Whether you pray, give or go, we reach the world together for Christ.
